If I told you that one of my all-time fantasies was to travel back in time and experience the 1970's would you believe me? Of course you would, I'm so predictable. Well on Memorial Day Weekend I was able to get a taste of what it was like to travel in a Volks Wagon Bus. Ok, so maybe it wasn't from the 1970's, it was from the late 1980's but still it was nothing short of a hippy experience.
Joanna, Roland and I drove 12 hours ( I lied just now, Joanna actually drove the ENTIRE WAY!! The bus was stick shift) from East Hanover New Jersey to Nashville Tennessee. Through out the drive we would get compliments whenever, where ever we stopped for gas or a stretch break. Along the drive we would get honked at and given the peace sign, it was seriously super cool.
Ubers/Lyfts were super cheap down there so getting to the downtown scene from the RV site that we parked at was never a problem. Downtown Nashville was very much alive. The streets were filled with bachelorette groups, college kids and many tourists. There was live music playing in every bar/restaurant you stepped in. Even Karaoke bars were taken very seriously! Any one who went on stage to sing, they sang with so much passion and talent, it felt like everyone was a rock-star, I mean Country-Star. Music City USA, I get it now.
